Adobe Systems asked fine art photogragher Jerry Uelsmann to try using a computer to composite images. Mr. Uelsmann had traditionally done all his composites in the camera or darkroom with multiple exposures.
His work has been exhibited in hundreds of shows worldwide and his photographs are in permanent collections at the Los Angeles County Art Museum, as well as other major museums.
This is the image he created as his first digital work in Photoshop...

Image 1 first needed to be cropped and straightened, then converted to a positive image. It was then placed into Image 3.
Layer Masks were used to brush in transparency to have the portions of the hands revealed below the boat.
Image 2 was then added to Image 3. Layer Masks created transparency where it overlapped the hands and boat.

Peaches is transformed into a "Puddle Princess" thanks to images of a cube, light beams, crown, necklace, the ever-popular ImageReady rubber duck, as well as a cool plug-in called Aurora from Digital Element.
Aurora was used it to generate the water and sky - then I added all the other goodies until she looked deligthfully regal and baffled.
The effects ware created using a combination of Layer Masks and Blending Modes.
