This is an example of typical portrait retouching where subtle flaws are removed or diminished...
The Healing Brush was used to smooth the subject's skin and reduce the bagginess around the eye area.
Then a digital "chin lift" was done to lessen the saggy appearance around the neck.

Photoshop is also an excellent tool to quickly restore old images which may have tears or damage to the emulsion.
The Patch Tool was used to sample the good areas of the image and use them to replace the damaged portions.
The Clone Tool was also useful in areas where the Patch Tool didn't maintain the sharper contrasts in the original image - such as the spot on the jacket shoulder.

Fixing color casts and improving skins tones is done precisely by manipulating color channels in the Curves settings.
The color of the skin was sampled on the image and values were monitored in the Info palette as fine adjustments were made on each color channel to balance the tones.

I took this photo years ago in Tanzania and loved the composition. After scanning it from a 4x6 print, it looked a bit flat.
Using selections to isolate different areas of the image and adjustment layers to correct specific parts, the picture has a lot more detail and improved color.
