New Squid Gallery Pieces

"Metro Pets" is indirectly the result of over two years of rescue work of cats and kittens in the Los Angeles area.

In addition to my own cats, Bubbles, Mango & Peaches, I have photographed hundreds of adoptable kittens and cats for the Petfinder.com web site.

These portraits were an inspiration for the piece, which was created specifically for the PAWS/LA Pet Art fundraiser in 2005.

All the “Metro Pets” have had a journey, some more difficult than others, but ultimately a happy one in finding loving and permanent homes. The Paris Metro passes create a whimsical and colorful way to feature their tiny, yet detailed portraits.

This portrait is done in Corel Painter, a wonderful "natural media" digital painting application, which perfectly complements Photoshop.

A photograph was used as a guide for the final painting. Various types of brushes and coloring substances in Painter were used, such as dry brushes, acrylics, pastels and chalks, which combined to make the final delicate, pastel-like drawing.

Smooth strokes kept the softness of her fur and the shading, by different colors layered upon each other, maintained enough detail of Bubbles' expressive face and lovely coat.

Mango is shown here costumed as a cute vegetable sculpture, which was created by Helena Dbaly in Switzerland.

Her artistic creatures sculpted from various vegetables add flair to any dinner party and her own Aby, Faramir, often tries to nibble on her work. Thank goodness this one survived long enough for Mango to pose with it.
